Water before a picturesque square

Lyabi Hauz in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, takes its name from its position beside a pool. A hauz stored water for a neighbourhood when its supply channels were not flowing. The water gave the surrounding buildings a shared centre.

Three major buildings gather here. The Kukeldash Madrasa dates from 1568. Nadir Divan Begi's khanaqah, a place associated with lodging and religious life, was built in 1620; his madrasa followed in 1622. The group combines a practical water supply with places for study and hospitality.

Before examining an entrance, look at the pool and the space around its edges. The buildings leave an opening where people can pause as well as pass through.

The school that was here first

The Kukeldash Madrasa is older than Nadir Divan Begi's buildings. It was a substantial educational complex, with 160 student rooms, or hujras. Its exterior includes open balconies, an unusual detail where a madrasa might otherwise present closed walls to the street.

Notice what that difference does. A wall of openings gives an institution another relationship with the space outside it. The school becomes more than a doorway concealing an internal courtyard.

An existing school became part of a later ensemble. The pond and the newer buildings joined something already established in this part of Bukhara.

Two buildings with one patron's name

The khanaqah and the madrasa both bear Nadir Divan Begi's name, but their functions differed. The khanaqah combined religious life with accommodation for wandering dervishes. The madrasa was an institution of learning.

Read the pair with that difference in mind. Hospitality, religious practice and education could occupy neighbouring buildings without being the same activity. Their patron gave this corner of the city more than another imposing facade.

A storyteller among the older buildings

A much later figure joins the older architecture: the bronze statue of the comic storyteller Khoja Nasriddin. It belongs to the twentieth century. Alongside the schools and religious lodging, it gives the square a character beyond the formal entrances.
