Explore Oxford

Oxford's famous buildings are often working institutions. The Bodleian still serves readers, Christ Church combines a college with a cathedral, and the museums continue to research the objects they display. Understanding those jobs makes their doors, courtyards and impressive facades easier to read.

These five guides take you from the medieval library and Tudor college to the museum collections and a castle reused as a prison. Each has a useful Quick take and a Full story. They are free written guides in English, with photos and map pins; this collection has no audio.

Books, study and worship

The Bodleian story follows a library emptied and then rebuilt around a growing collection. Christ Church tells a different institutional story, where Wolsey’s college project became a joint college and cathedral under Henry VIII.
