Évora city guide

Explore Évora

Évora makes its different centuries easy to compare. The Roman Temple's columns stand close to the medieval cathedral. The aqueduct explains how the sixteenth-century city obtained water, while the Colégio do Espírito Santo tells a story of education, closure and return.

These five free written guides give each place its own explanation. Choose a Quick take or continue into the Full story. Photographs and map pins help you recognise the subjects; a guide does not include admission or promise access to every room.

The high ground of the old city

Compare a Roman forum monument with a medieval cathedral. Their proximity is useful, but their purposes and surviving forms are quite different.

Belief, water and learning

The Chapel of Bones explains a Franciscan reflection on mortality. The aqueduct and historic college widen the visit to the services and institutions that supported the city.

Choose interiors before setting your day

The temple and aqueduct can be understood from public spaces. A visit centred on the cathedral, Chapel of Bones or college depends more on opening and admission arrangements. Check the relevant operator before making a trip for an interior.

The aqueduct pin marks a stretch of a long structure. It does not define an eighteen-kilometre walking route. The old city also has slopes and stone paving, so choose your own pace and check access for any roof or upper floor.

Keep the ordinary streets in the picture

Évora's World Heritage status covers a historic centre, including its low houses and street pattern. Between the five subjects, notice how the stone monuments sit among a much smaller scale of building. That relationship is part of what makes the city understandable.
