Granada city guide

Explore Granada

Granada's monuments have different relationships with the city. The Alhambra was a fortified royal settlement. The Generalife was a rural estate whose water fed productive land and pleasure gardens. Below them, El Bañuelo preserves the rooms of a public bath.

The cathedral and Royal Chapel add later ambitions and different religious purposes. These five written guides explain each subject separately, with a useful Quick take and a Full story. Real photos and map pins help you choose what to explore.

A royal city and its rural estate

Read the Alhambra as a complete settlement, then look at the Generalife through water, cultivation and changing garden design. These neighbouring places have connected histories but distinct stories.

The lower city and the Darro

Compare a public medieval bath with the cathedral and royal burial chapel. The three guides cover everyday use, an extended building project and dynastic commemoration.

Plan admission before following the pins

An Alhambra visit can involve a specific palace entry time and a route within a large complex. Use the Patronato’s current instructions and ticket information. Tourttle’s guide and site reference pin do not include admission or define the correct entrance.

The cathedral and Royal Chapel are neighbours with separate identities and visitor arrangements. El Bañuelo is elsewhere, on Carrera del Darro. The map is for choosing places, not a promise that all five interiors fit into one timed walk.

Notice the change in elevation

The Darro divides the hillsides recognised in Granada’s World Heritage property. Climbing to the Alhambra is different from moving between the lower-city monuments. Check your chosen approach and allow for slopes, heat and pauses rather than using straight-line map distance as walking time.

The World Heritage property is specifically the Alhambra, Generalife and Albayzín. That designation should not be read as a blanket label for every later monument in the city.
